As construction begins and CiderFest approach, and a camper is now parked next to the shop, driveway space is at a premium. We can’t afford a giant log pile taking up space near the barn. So, last Wednesday… no, the other last Wednesday. The 16th…

Daddy and the two middlest children tackled the remaining logs. Obviously, we had left the biggest until the last.

Ellie brought school, and found herself a lovely little desk, if you don’t mind some pine sap on your butt. I reminded her that we had a school desk just across the driveway in the shop, all set up in the shade.
She replied, “I know, but if I’m in the shop I can’t get distracted by the construction work, so then I won’t have an excuse for not doing my school.”

Seppi forgot to bring a hat so he had to improvise.

He improvised for his sister, too.

Turns out she is actually pretty hard to distract once she has a good book to read. Apparently Vasco de Gama is more interesting than construction workers or log splitting.

The last three logs were too thick to split with regular steel wedges, so we cut some 2×4 wedges to get through them.

One log remaining. This was about 6 hours of work to this point. Daddy was getting a bit tired, but still wanted to finish before we went home.

So he recruited some help for the last one.

Two dump truck loads of logs, split. A few are waiting to be moved, but they can be done for morning exercise, some other day.
I do not lie when I say that Daddy was in bed and passed out before 8:00 PM that night.
