Plums

The Asian plums are coming in strong right now. Our golden yellow plum is having its best year ever right now. Mommy took a peck of plums up to Swiss Kids Kamp every day, and still we have only used about a third of the plums on the tree. We need to make some jelly or something, if only we could find the time.

The Hollywood plum did not do so well. It got frosted while it was blossoming, so it did not pollinate well. In fact, we only got 5 plums from it total. But they were delicious.

The Monsieur Hatif plum, however, is a European plum, that blossoms a few weeks later than the other two, and is not self-fertile. Consequently, it produces few if any plums.

We have only two this year.

Another example of “You don’t know what you don’t know.” This is why I did so much research and actually called the Raintree Nursery people on the phone before ordering plums for the farm. (I hate talking on the phone).

We do have a plum at the farm that we bought from a local nursery two years ago. We are getting plums for the first time this year, and it looks promising. I forget what variety it is, but it looks a bit like a damson to my un-expert eye. I’ll have to see if I can dig up the records of that purchase so we can label that tree.

I have a powerpoint with a slide for most of the perennials we have purchased for the farm, and I have an idea to get them engraved on little metal plaques so each tree will be labeled for posterity. However, we have better uses for that time and money right now. Maybe someday.
