Raspberries and Rhubarb and Canning, Oh My!

Last Saturday was a 4H canning day. Kathleen is the canning instructor for one of the local 4H clubs, and one of our friends is the canning instructor for another local club. A few times a year they get together to do a multi-club canning day, teaching the kids how to can jams and jellies, and helping them to prep entries for fair.

So Daddy was was asked to provide rhubarb early on Saturday.

Evie has been picking raspberries every other day for the last week. Many of them are frozen, but some will be made into jelly. Those need to be pureed first.

The squeezo is a great contraption for this, and is tons of fun for the littles, who can’t be involved with the actual jelly making and canning.

Raspberry puree. It’s good for what ales you.

Six pints of raspberry, yielded a quart of puree.

After we finished that, Daddy had to finish up some cleanup in the kitchen. Seppi asked, “Daddy, can we watch a video about somebody making something?”

So he watched Rex Krueger build a shave horse.

Meanwhile Mommy and the two older girls went to their 4H canning event.

And made jellies, jams, preserves and concentrates all day.

Most of them will go in pantries and cupboards for the winter, but the best of them will go with the girls to be entered in the various county fairs in the area.

When the whole world is controlled by AI, at least a hand full of young people out there will be able to feed themselves the human way.
