Our Sheep

Making Friendly Friendly

Evie wants to take a sheep to fair next year, so she has started working with one of this year’s lambs. She chose “Friendly” (so named because she didn’t run away as fast as her sister when the kids tried to pet her as a baby) because Snow is too small and doesn’t have good katahdin hair, and Cookie is the result of inbreeding, and so is destined for eating, and Friendly’s twin, Star, is not as Friendly.

After a couple of weeks of regular work, Friendly is actually standing still for scratches and snacks, and even allowed Evie to put a halter on her.

In 11 months she may be quite a fine show sheep, although I am not sure what we will do with her after fair season. With the extended summer drought we are running smack into issues of carrying capacity on the farm.
