Our Pigs

A Very Pregnant Pig

Our Meishan sow, Gertrude, is very pregnant. We think (actually we know for pretty sure) she was bred on or around May 8th, which means she should farrow sometime between August 29 and August 31. So right around the corner.

She has been having trouble getting into the tall feed trough recently, so I moved the short wooden one into her pen yesterday morning.

But this is how she spends most of the day. She will nap for a bit in the sun in the morning, or in the shade in the afternoon. Then she gets up, eats a few mouthfuls, goes back for a nap.

In the afternoon she climbs into the tub, splashes enough water out to make a mud wallow, and then lies down in that for a while.

Vulvar changes noted yesterday morning, and she has begun building herself a little nest in the litter in the house, so…

Any day or even hour, now.
