Our two steers were slaughtered last week, on the 9th. You might be wondering what Seppi is doing in the willow tree. He is trimming willow shoots. We cut a big pile of them to feed to the steers when the slaughter team arrived. They love it, they eat it like candy. Partially it's a… Continue reading Goodbye Steers

Prepping garden beds
The radishes are done for the first half of the season, and we harvested the chiogga beets. Now it's time to replant the beds. But first... A mater! One beautiful little Heirloom Marriage, ripening right on the vine! I am so happy! Broccoli for lunch. Trust her, she is very skillful with that thing, and… Continue reading Prepping garden beds
Re-tarping the Shade Mobile
Cows like to scratch. They will scratch themselves on anything available. If the only thing available is their mobile shade/shelter, they will scratch themselves on that. It that shelter is covered with a light duty tarp that hangs over the edge of the frame, they will eventually wear through tarp and shred it. Like this.… Continue reading Re-tarping the Shade Mobile

Tree Hay
Early this year, in January, I think, we had two big willow trees on the farm cut down from some 30-40 feet tall to about 6 feet tall. There were several reasons for this. The sheep will happily bound over and eat all the alfalfa pellets. The steers are a little bit more circumspect. But they let… Continue reading Happy Cows
Helping out
Getting ready to go to the farm on Tuesday Morning. Seppi picked out his farming outfit with care. Hat to keep the sun off. 'Spenders to keep his shorts up. Boots to keep his feet from getting poked. And a bag of books, because we had to go to take the older girls to violin,… Continue reading Helping out
Mother’s Day Came Early
For one, we actually managed to make plans and bring them to fruition to get Mommy the mother’s day present she really wanted this year. Although Winnie thinks the cows were a Winnie day present. When is Winnie Day, you ask? Every day is Winnie Day.
Opening up the lane… by closing it off!
Well, it's not pretty, but it will do. Two 8-foot gates closing a 16 foot gap at the end of the laneway. They are only fastened by two relatively light chains with extremely light clips, but there is a pile of rocks (yes, I know, but I was in a hurry) behind the middle section… Continue reading Opening up the lane… by closing it off!
