Our Cows, Our Pasture, Our Sheep

Opening up the lane… by closing it off!

Well, it’s not pretty, but it will do.

Two 8-foot gates closing a 16 foot gap at the end of the laneway. They are only fastened by two relatively light chains with extremely light clips, but there is a pile of rocks (yes, I know, but I was in a hurry) behind the middle section until we can get a heavier chain down there.

Honestly, it is not very strong, and if a full-sized bull really wanted to get through it, he probably could.

But these little guys are not full-sized, and soon won’t be bulls so, hopefully it works out.

It was important to get the lane opened up to grazing because the two wethers were beginning to think the grass looked greener on the other side of the fence… which someone had turned off.

After we untangled that one…

Either he jumped back in or his twin brother did. (Honestly, they are twins, they look exactly alike. We can’t tell them apart.)

So we put them out in the laneway and let the pigs root around in the mud for a bit.

Such a pretty little calf.

They loved it, but went right back into their pen at the end of the day. We don’t want them out there all the time because we are still getting our rotation set up, but we do want them to be able to graze at least some hours every day, so the laneway is going to be our sacrificial paddock for a week or two.
