The hardneck garlic we planted last year is almost ready. It has been growing scapes.

The scapes are the curly flower stalks on the top of the garlic “neck.” These would straighten out and develop into a flower if left alone, but we don’t want that. We want the garlic plant to put all its energy into growing a nice big bulb, so we snap the scapes off and put them in a bucket.

A bucket full before breakfast, we stuck them in the refrigerator during the day. Kathleen pointed out that we could always feed them to the goats. Then they would be…
Scape goats!
I love that woman. I should have thought of that one myself but I was busy and it…
e-scaped me!

When we got back in the afternoon, Seppi snipped all the flower ends off the scapes.

Then snipped them into little bits and dropped them in the food processor.

Seppi loves the food processor.

It’s like a power tool. But in the kitchen.

We had left some butter out to soften, and we dumped that in the bowl,

And whipped it all together with the electric beater.

It was Kathleen’s idea to freeze the butter in the old Baby Bullet molds. This will give us little 4 ounce (ish) blocks that we can pull out of the freezer whenever we want to cook with some garlic infused butter.
Not bad for a grand total of 30 minutes of work.
