We recently bought a trailer load of lumber from an auction, getting a steal of a deal. We now need a place to put the lumber, so we can empty the trailer, so we can use it to haul trash again, as usual. So we are building a lumber rack, with some of the lumber we got in the haul.

That has been the plan, of course, ever since we first decided not to put a canning kitchen out in the shop. That’s why we cleaned up this area in the back right corner.

We cut all the uprights at once, cutting the half-lap joints out with rotary saw and chisel.

Mark out the mortices, and cut them all to depth, scoring with the rotary saw.

Then we tap the waste out with a chisel.

Ellie decided to try her hand at it, but she wasn’t able to hit with the necessary strength and accuracy at the same time. However, she did focus so hard that she didn’t notice her baby sister in the background taking her drink…

One afternoon, we got this far. Uprights and cross ribs in place, just need to add the long boards and an end brace for the corner above the band saw, (for those times when we end up getting 16 foot lumber).
