Bed 1 in the garden is going to be root crops this year (carrots, onions, beets) as such it needs to be one of the first ones prepped, since we will be seeding these very soon. Bed 2 is already seeded and growing nicely with winter wheat. Bed 3 is going to be the legumes… Continue reading More garden prep.

Wheat and beans
The garden is slowly beginning to take shape. Our winter wheat is coming in very nicely, and we even have seed heads forming. The beans have come in quite satisfactory, unlike most of the rest of the seeds we have planted. We have four trellises worth of blue lake, two trellises worth of purple French… Continue reading Wheat and beans
Worm castings, and soil temperature
Yesterday afternoon the soil temperature was about 60°. Then it rained all night long. Barely over 50. Nothing cools the soil down like 12 hours of cold rain. We had about twice that many with end rot on them, so we are going to treat them with calcium again as soon as… Continue reading ‘Maters and Corns and Beans, Oh my!
Tomatoes galore
We sent the kids out to pick tomatoes yesterday. I guess you could call this mission success. And ten minutes later… “Daddy, let me in, I picked some more!” Oh, and a bunch of grapes that they were Not supposed to pick, but somehow it got picked anyway. So… Anyone want some snacking tomatoes?
Tomato update.
A beautiful heirloom marriage, without a trace of blossom end rot. Four days after treating the tomatoes for blossom, end rot with the lime, the “end rot“ spray that we ordered from Amazon finally arrived. By that time we were already starting to see a bunch of well formed sauce tomatoes without end rot, although… Continue reading Tomato update.
