Busy day last Tuesday. We dug all the taters. This year we planted German Butterball variety. We had never tried them before, but they had the word "butter" in the title, so Mommy had to have them. We also found a volunteer tomato, looks like it came from one of last year's costolutos. Lots of… Continue reading Taters and Wheat

Catching up
Last Thursday was a catch-up day on the farm. Daddy and the three youngers finished school quickly and got over to the farm to get some work done. Mommy and Evie stayed home to finish Evie's school and then went out to run some errands. Including dropping off a picnic lunch for the hungry farmers.… Continue reading Catching up
Garden Update
Here it is, September. The gardening season is about over, because it has been getting cool and rainy again, and now... Now! the garden has decided to wake up and make something of itself. Get in my belly, corn! Tomatoes just beginning to turn, corn beginning to tassel out. Let's see if anything can manage… Continue reading Garden Update
Gardening fail
Like Saint Paul, I boast willingly of my weakness… The ultimate gardening fail, buying tomatoes from the store in August.
Ducks and Broccoli.
Broccoli! Some of it survived slug-aggedon! Never mind the teethmarks. That’s what happens when you deliver vegetables to a four-year-old and tell him to take them to his mom. Quality control The ducks have been getting a little too big for their temporary, mobile shelter, since we haven’t built a permanent mobile shelter, or even… Continue reading Ducks and Broccoli.
Green (and Purple) Beans!
It's that time of the year! Beans are coming in. We had our first picking on Tuesday. Nasturtiums, and a hummingbird. Six quarts, first haul of the year. (The purple ones turn green when they get pressure canned.)
Would you like a can of ‘lini?
Well folks, I am pleased to announce that for the first time ever we have a very respectable row of cannellini beans. Those are the short beans, the tall ones are blue lakes, and French runner beans. And the cannellini are loaded! We have to wait until the plants are completely dried out and desiccated,… Continue reading Would you like a can of ‘lini?
Some like it hot
Others… Not so much. At 96° today at the farm, pretty warm for this neck of the woods. Daddy insists that it is not that hot, compared to other places he has lived and worked, but for those unaccustomed, it’s pretty doggone warm. That’s why we got to the farm bright and early this morning,… Continue reading Some like it hot
Catch Up Post
It has been a busy week or two since coming back from National Guard. Busy in good ways, but not necessarily on the farm. Not, at any rate, projects that make good blog posts. A lot of our spare time has been spent doing things as a family as much as possible. But, looking through… Continue reading Catch Up Post
Compost!
Despite our mixed results with gardening so far this year, phase three of the garden project is finally under way. (Oooh! Phases! They make it sound so official and planned out!) Really, they are just loose steps in our mental map of getting to where we want to be with the garden (highly productive, renewable,… Continue reading Compost!
