We have been gone from the farm for almost two weeks, due to National Guard and a wedding in Tennessee. That's right, all the Kraeger men are married now. No more available in this batch, you'll have to wait until the next batch matures. We returned to a somewhat neglected garden. Some sort of animal… Continue reading Family Garden Day

Radish lacto-ferment
We are coming to the end of the radish season. Most of the ones we picked this week were woody and just starting to bolt. This bucket from late last week was the last good harvest, except for the Runder-schwarzers, which haven't really come into their own yet. Radishes are one of Daddy's favorite vegetables,… Continue reading Radish lacto-ferment
Garden odd jobs
We are a bit behind on the garden this year. The weather has not been cooperating. It is cold at night, cold enough to keep the soil from being warm enough to germinate the seeds for warmer season crops, but hot and dry enough during the day to keep the cooler season crops from growing… Continue reading Garden odd jobs
A Winnie and Daddy day.
The big kids all got to go fishing with Deedee and Papa over this last three days, so Winnie was an only child for a few days. While she likes having Mommy and Daddy all to herself (she especially enjoys lying across both our laps for our evening Rosary) she misses her siblings when they… Continue reading A Winnie and Daddy day.
Ellie’s Garden
While we don't have an active garden at the house anymore (we barely have time for the one garden at the farm) Ellie still cares about her little flower bed at the end of the orchard. Still looks pretty wintery, but... There are some buds on some of the trees. Especially this little Hollywood Plum.… Continue reading Ellie’s Garden
Building a Low Tunnel
First of, I can't claim any credit for this idea, but it was too cheap and simple and quick to build, I just had to steal it. It comes from a youtube channel by a vegetable grower in Saskatoon, and the whole channel has some great insights and tips. I mentioned before we built the… Continue reading Building a Low Tunnel
Hoop Bender
This week has been too busy, we have only had a grand total of two hours to work on farm projects all week. One of those hours was spent gathering information. In the garden beds, in direct sunlight in the middle of the day, soil temps are about 50 degrees. Under the cold frame the… Continue reading Hoop Bender
Muddy
You know that one kid, that wakes up before all the other kids, and gets up and after it while everyone else is still working on getting up? On Tuesday that was Winnie. This is a picture of her running around the living room singing "Get up! Get up! Time to Get Up!" and "What… Continue reading Muddy
Gardening Buddies
I love these little girls so much! One of them is not so little anymore. Those carharts and stripy insulated rain coat were Evie's once, and they are still going strong. Parsnip seeds and carrot seeds are too small to be worth planting individually using the form, so we just scatter them thinly. Or not… Continue reading Gardening Buddies
Saturday Morning Work
Saturday was a busy day, with auto-repair, confessions, and a wedding. But that's no reason not to get in a couple hours of work. Another pathway, another garden bed. We are running out of time, as usual. After Tuesday we won't be able to get back to the garden for almost two weeks.
