Tuesday, 9/30/2025 We pulled the sauerkraut that has been fermenting in the basement for the last 19 days. The temperature in the basement is cooling down as the weather outside cools. It is now about 64 degrees ambient temperature. The jar on the right is a special case. This was a jar of red cabbage… Continue reading Green Sauerkraut Taste Test

Lord’s Day Dinner: Man Style
We have been talking extensively about the modern western economic system in Men's Group recently. Suffice it to say we have a few critiques. I thought about sharpening up my pitchfork, but decided to make sauerkraut and read "Cathonomics" instead. Man invented usury, but God gives for free. I wonder if we can make wine… Continue reading Lord’s Day Dinner: Man Style
Sauerkraut!
What do you do with a 13 Lb red cabbage? This cabbage was one of the late planted cabbages from last year that didn't sprout in time for winter, but took off as soon as the ground started to warm up in the spring. It has been growing next to the pea trellis ever since.… Continue reading Sauerkraut!
Planting out Cold Weather Crops
A tray of brussels sprouts. A tray of celery. A tray of Swiss chard and a tray of cabbage. All the girls are inside, out of the rain. You can see where the cold frame was. Sauerkraut… Fail!
This is what an epic Sauerkraut fail looks like. Smelled pretty bad, too. You can see the bubbles forming in the biofilm on top of the liquid. Oddly enough... The kraut underneath neither looked nor smelled bad once the brine was drained off. It is possible the mold was only on the surface of the… Continue reading Sauerkraut… Fail!
Kraut!
We've been meaning to get to this one for weeks, ever since the first frost. We had 6 big cabbages in the garden, and Daddy wanted to make sauerkraut. Unfortunately, that was November. It is now January. One thing and another has conspire to keep us out of the garden for the last two months… Continue reading Kraut!
Winter Brassicas
Our local hardware store was having a sale on their brassica starts. Also, let's repair this water line that Daddy stabbed with the potato fork. Some cabbages, some kale and some brussels sprouts. Hopefully we can have fresh green food through the winter this year.
Taters and Brassicas.
Let's check on the garden, shall we? A bee on the buckwheat. It has become time to plant our winter brassicas. We have a row dedicated to broccoli, cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts and rutabagas that we hope to harvest all winter long. However, it is also the row in which all of our volunteer potatoes… Continue reading Taters and Brassicas.
