Harvest time is always busy on the farm. Plants mature, fruit and veggies are ready when they are reay with little to no concern for what we have going on in our non-gardening lives. Tuesday was a good example of that. Beans and blackberries are both coming in hardcore, but this is also the weekend… Continue reading Busy nights

Ducks and Broccoli.
Broccoli! Some of it survived slug-aggedon! Never mind the teethmarks. That’s what happens when you deliver vegetables to a four-year-old and tell him to take them to his mom. Quality control The ducks have been getting a little too big for their temporary, mobile shelter, since we haven’t built a permanent mobile shelter, or even… Continue reading Ducks and Broccoli.
Green (and Purple) Beans!
It's that time of the year! Beans are coming in. We had our first picking on Tuesday. Nasturtiums, and a hummingbird. Six quarts, first haul of the year. (The purple ones turn green when they get pressure canned.)
Threshing Time
Last week we harvested the wheat, so that it wouldn't get rained on. Timing the harvest is a bit of a challenge. If you harvest it too early the sead heads are green and they don't let go of the seeds worth a darn. If you harvest it too late the seed heads dry out… Continue reading Threshing Time
Bringing in the Wheat
I was originally planning on harvesting the wheat on Monday, but it is supposed to rain on Monday, and Saturday is looking like it’s going to be a busy day, so I took a couple hours to cut it and get it into the shop on Thursday. 140 ft.² of Fife red wheat planted last… Continue reading Bringing in the Wheat
Taters and Brassicas.
Let's check on the garden, shall we? A bee on the buckwheat. It has become time to plant our winter brassicas. We have a row dedicated to broccoli, cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts and rutabagas that we hope to harvest all winter long. However, it is also the row in which all of our volunteer potatoes… Continue reading Taters and Brassicas.
Wheat
The Red Fife winter wheat we planted last year is turning brown and dry. It will very soon be ready. Pluck and roll the heads. Blow gently to blow away the husks, and... Wheat berries! Hopefully we will harvest it on Monday.
Would you like a can of ‘lini?
Well folks, I am pleased to announce that for the first time ever we have a very respectable row of cannellini beans. Those are the short beans, the tall ones are blue lakes, and French runner beans. And the cannellini are loaded! We have to wait until the plants are completely dried out and desiccated,… Continue reading Would you like a can of ‘lini?
Jerusha the Jerusalem Artichoke
Forgot to post these a few weeks back. I should really try to get out to the back of the field to see how she's doing. Looking a little droopy after we watered her in, but hopefull she's looking up now. Jerusalem artichoke is a perennial tuber which produces roots high in a form of… Continue reading Jerusha the Jerusalem Artichoke
Compost!
Despite our mixed results with gardening so far this year, phase three of the garden project is finally under way. (Oooh! Phases! They make it sound so official and planned out!) Really, they are just loose steps in our mental map of getting to where we want to be with the garden (highly productive, renewable,… Continue reading Compost!
