Our ducklings were getting too big for their brooder, and spilling their water everywhere, and making an infernal mess. So we put them in a bucket and moved them out to the orchard. That's right, a bucket full of ducks. We aren't completely sure yet, but it looks like our "random" run of leftover heritage… Continue reading A Bucket of Ducks

Wheat
The Red Fife winter wheat we planted last year is turning brown and dry. It will very soon be ready. Pluck and roll the heads. Blow gently to blow away the husks, and... Wheat berries! Hopefully we will harvest it on Monday.
Happy birthday, Uncle!
Guess what he got for his birthday!
Squirrel!
Saturday morning, just like most mornings right about now, Daddy was digging a ditch, somewhere between 5 and 6 AM, and he looked at where the ditch started... And where the ditch was going... and realized that this is more or less the line where we want to build a gate across the driveway. This… Continue reading Squirrel!
Oh! If only…
Moving all of the hay yesterday, I discovered that my hands are not what they used to be. I used to move 10 racks worth of bailed hay in a single morning, with bare hands and never got a blister. But now, because I work in an office, I have, sissy girly hands rather than… Continue reading Oh! If only…
Hay There!
Well, Hay There! How you doing? Papa and Deedee have a three acre field behind their house that grows a heap of grass every year. This year they told us we could have the hay off of it, if we paid someone to bale it. Papa found and old friend of his willing to cut… Continue reading Hay There!
A Last Ditch Effort

This is the trench that will run water out of the tank and splice it into the line running out to the pasture. And this is why hand tools for digging rather… Continue reading A Last Ditch Effort
Timber!
Our elderly neighbor had a couple of big old cottonwoods, overgrown with ivy, that have been ominously leaning over our barn, shop, and hogcken coopen for the last two years since we have owned the farm. We finally got around to chatting with him about it, and worked out a deal to get a local… Continue reading Timber!
Happy Cows
A far cry from when we first got them and they wouldn’t let a human within arm reach. I mean the steers. But she was too pretty not to take her picture. The sheep will happily bound over and eat all the alfalfa pellets. The steers are a little bit more circumspect. But they let… Continue reading Happy Cows
Would you like a can of ‘lini?
Well folks, I am pleased to announce that for the first time ever we have a very respectable row of cannellini beans. Those are the short beans, the tall ones are blue lakes, and French runner beans. And the cannellini are loaded! We have to wait until the plants are completely dried out and desiccated,… Continue reading Would you like a can of ‘lini?
