Our Sheep

Eunice’s Twins

Got to the farm for chores about 5 AM on Monday, and a little surprise was waiting.

Eunice had her lambs!

That’s right lambs. Twins.

There is a little black ewe lamb and a little white ewe lamb.

And Eunice is being a great mom, nuzzling and licking and feeding and herding them here and there.

The little white lamb was 7Lbs 8 oz.

The little black one was 9 LBs 10 oz.

We put them out in the pasture with their mom.

The kids came out to see them in the afternoon after school. As the Good Book says, “And the children gave names unto all living creatures, and whatever name they gave them, that was their name.”

Winnie wanted to name all of them “Mimi-the-Pooh.” Seppi was disappointed there were no boys.

So he could name one of them Paul Bunyan.

In the end, the older girls prevailed and named the white lamb “Friendly” and the black lamb “Star.”

Star and Friendly after surviving their first night in the rainy pasture. Always good when the young stock shows up ready to play in our cold wet spring climate. Of note, these twins are not inbred, and so therefore potentially we could keep them as breeding stock next year. However, that is going to depend largely on the carrying capacity of the land. A full grown cow (Iris) plus a yearling heifer (Darla) can eat a good deal of grass. Without supplementing with hay, we won’t be able to support them, plus even the three ewes we already have, so odds are we will sell or butcher them next spring.
