our Chickens, Our Food

Saturdays and Soups

Nothing goes better with late winter weather than soup and fresh bread.

Especially when you have been Rosary ruck marching. Like a man.

Saturday was a divide and conquer day. After First Saturday Mass, Mommy and the older girls went shopping for one set of necessities (mostly fabric), while Daddy and the little two went shopping for another kind of necessities (mostly feed and seed).

Winnie is so proud of herself, she can carry a big 20 Lbs bag of cover crop seed!

Picking up alfalfa at the Graham Hay Market. The pasture is green, and the sun is returning. Very soon we should be putting them back out on the pasture.

Until then, Winnie is here to make sure her Moo Tow and her sheepies have plenty of green snacks. Especially Matilda.

Monday morning, dark and early before chores, I picked some veggies for soup. Celery, radish, turnip, rutabaga.

The radish turned out to be not worth salvaging. The worms did a number on it. The rest of the veggies were good to go.

Roasting three marrow bones.

Then simmering them with salt, red wine vinegar, onion, carrot peels and the trimmings from the celery.

And some herbs. Let it simmer for 6 hours at least.

This gives us time to bake our bread. Winnie made a loaf, but it got a little bit out of control. It was not pretty, but it was delicious for lunch.

I think the boule came out better.

We did not have more than a few minutes at the farm, enough time to do chores.

Ellie found 5 eggs! That’s the magic of sunlight, coaxing new production from our few remaining hens. Next week we have to get our brooder set up because we have new chicks coming in the week after.

Ellie is still not a fan of soup, but she bravely ate it all like the big girl she is.
