Our Hollywood plum tree produced like crazy this year, unlike the past two years (the tree is only three years old). It is the earliest blooming plum we have, and as such, is subject to late frosts, while the other two plums have a tendency to miss the late frosts. This year, however, we had a nice warm spell in early March, right when the hollywood plum was blooming, so it had good pollinator support and good fruit set. Then we had a cold spell in later March/early April while the other plums were blossoming, so they did not have good fruit set. Consequently, only the hollywood plum is fruiting this year.

We bought this plum because Mommy specifically asked for an all red plum so she could make her famous silk plum jelly. It’s easy enough to find a red plum with yellow flesh, but it took some searching to find a plum with red skin and red flesh.

Unfortunately the squirrels started showing a little too much interest in the plums on this tree. Last year, those pesky wee beasties stripped the entire yellow plum tree, and left not one single plum for us. So we got a little overzealous, and we picked them first, right before fair week.

Not to worry, Mommy has a steam juicer.

A couple of liters later, and this is ready to go in the freezer. After fair is over we can pull it out, thaw it, and make jelly out of it.
