Our Garden

Back in the Garden

Daddy got off orders for National Guard last Saturday.

Winnie was pretty much glued to him the whole day.

The garden has been growing like crazy for the last two weeks. The beans that were so slow to start have been coming in buckets. Mommy picked ten quarts worth last week. Daddy and Winnie picked another 7 quarts worth on Saturday.

The cucurbit trellis looks lovely. Pumpkins are ripening on the vines. Beyond that in the background of the picture the tomatoes are doing the same.

Squashes on the outside of the trellis. You can see our favorite Georgia Candy Roasters right next to Ellie’s left shoulder.

None of the slicing cucumbers survived the slugs, the voles and ducks, but we have a whole bunch of pickling cucumbers forming. Some of them have gone beyond pickling size, but that’s not a problem as long as you get them while they are still dark green.

Hopefully we’ll make some pickles in a week or two.

But these cukes we sliced up for lunch, and others we took to Lord’s Day.

“Daddy! Put this in your hat!”

Snipping beans! You may wonder how we get a bunch of kids to sit down and snip beans for 45 minutes or an hour. Well…

We have a secret weapon:
