Our Garden

Prepping garden beds

The radishes are done for the first half of the season, and we harvested the chiogga beets. Now it’s time to replant the beds. But first…

A mater! One beautiful little Heirloom Marriage, ripening right on the vine! I am so happy!

Broccoli for lunch. Trust her, she is very skillful with that thing, and sometimes even a little bit careful.

Winnie really enjoyed pulling out all the old daikon and pak choi plants.

She loaded them up in her little wheelbarrow (Evie in the background is encouraging beans to grow up the string instead of across the path.)

And she rolled them out to the barnyard…

Where we fed them to the “Moo Cows.”

Who thought they were absolutely delicious.

Bye bye, Moo Cows. The slaughter truck came and took them on Tuesday, July 9.

After we dumped off the radish stalks we dug dirt out of the chicken yard. Two years ago when we first put the chickens in there we filled the whole yard with wood chips a foot deep. Now there is a thin layer of dry wood chips, about an inch deep, and about four inches deep of black soil underneath it. It is time to harvest all that fertility and put it in the garden where it can do some good. We will also need to replace it with more wood chips so the chickens can doo it again.

It’s a hard knock’s life for Winnie.

Meanwhile the three older children elected themselves Redwall cooks.

Yes, Ellis is wearing a bean leaf in her hair.

Think maybe that nursery label is getting a bit snug?

A walnut!

Onions are coming in, some of them are getting pretty big.

About 2 1/2 inches, I should say.

These were some smaller ones that got pushed out by some digging creature. Rather than waste them, we will let them dry out and use them in cooking later. Maybe I will ferment them.

Tomatoes, Squash/Cucumbers, and buckwheat, with a healthy dose of borage in there.

Turnips, fall and winter broccoli, cabbage and chard.

And we planted another round of Cylindra beets. Ideally these will be ready to harvest in the fall.

Seppi loves watering things in.

At home we had a pork sirloin roast in the dutch oven,

And Evie made rice and beans. At this rate, Mommy and Daddy won’t have to cook any more soon.
