Bye Bye Geese

This post was accidentally sitting in my draft queue for the last three weeks.

Here it is, the end of May. Look who decided it was time to sit on her nest.

She’s been laying eggs since the beginning of March, but not sitting on them. We stopped taking the eggs at the beginning of April, so she could develop a good clutch, but still she wouldn’t sit.

So we gave up on the geese, and put them in the queue to be butchered with the ducks at the end of May.

And lo and behold, she starts sitting. Possibly this was because the grass finally grew up high enough to cover her, so she felt secluded enough to sit. Regardless, it was too late in the year, and all of the eggs were rotten. We buried them in a hole, (they popped like firecrackers) and now both of the geese are in the freezer.

Lesson learned, next time we try to raise geese, we should make sure they have a quiet, hidden area to nest in.
