Gardening and Homesteading

Welcome to the Jungle

The neighbor to the south is not really able to maintain his property anymore, so there is a little cottonwood forest grown up in it. That is, when you look at it from a distance it appears to be mostly cottonwood, but when you look at it up close…

Before

Boom! Poison hemlock. Not to mention wild blackberry and English ivy.

Check out the height on these hemlock plants, nearly twice the height of the scythe.

30-40 minutes of work, then I started hitting the blackberries more predominately, so it was time to switch tools, but more importantly, time to go home for breakfast and see the family.

Saturday morning before duck processing. Got my work cut out for me with the Baronyx machete.

This area is the boss level. Usually the hemlock, ivy and blackberry don’t really grow right on top of each other, but here they do. They are all interwoven through there, plus there is a giant pile of rebar almost touching a fencepost, so it is almost impossible to squeeze through, and very difficult to swing the machete (dinged the heck out of the blade on a hidden piece of rusted machinery 😦 ).

But finally I cut through and met up with the tunnel from the previous day. Our fence is cut free for another six months.

But if I look to the south…

That’s a job for another day.
