Our Garden, Our Orchard

Garden and Orchard work

Last Tuesday, we managed to get into the garden a little bit during the day.

Winnie and Daddy put twine on the bean trellis. They beans are starting to come in quite nicely, but we actually ran out of twine with two trellises left to go. We have more twine now, but haven’t gotten to stringing it yet. Hopefully we will get to that on Monday.

The kids picked pak choi stalks, nasturtium flowers and leaves, and Swiss chard leaves for a salad for lunch.

They also picked strawberries, ostensibly to garnish the salad, but almost none of those strawberries made it inside.

Daddy picked some more radishes, but they are all woody and sour, starting to bolt. I think we are done with radishes for the season, but we will let them grow out seed heads and try to eat the seed pods as they come in. Those are very tasty too.

We planted some comfrey under the big cherry tree, and Ellie wanted to check if there are any cherries growing in it. Apparently the only way to do this is to climb up into the tree.

Yes! There are green cherries growing in this tree.

It was a hot, sunny afternoon, perfect for reading a book in the shade.

Seppi decided to help Daddy in the garden, though. He hoed down all the volunteer buckwheat, so we can (re) plant corn. So for almost none of the corn we had previously planted has come up, so going from broke now with a 65 day, 75 day and 85 day variety from the local hardware store.

Very much doubt it is going to be knee high by the 4th of July, though. Unless we use Winnie’s knees.

Last thing we did for the day was cut down the thistles in the orchard. They place gets overrun with them, so every year we try to cut them down as best we can before they go to seed.

Seppi helped out by sitting on the fence and maintaining a steady stream of chatter.

He also did his best as a videographer and photographer.

That brush blade is so much easier to keep honed than the grass blade is, and it cuts like a dream.

We also had to pull thistles around the figs, inside the plant protectors.

Seppi’s job was handing the sharpening stones when Daddy needed them.

And putting them away when he was done with them.

All-in-all, it took about 30 minutes of easy work to knock down that thistle corner of the orchard.

Seppi was very proud of it, and wanted to give it a try himself.

He gave it a valiant effort, but he is still too small and short to wield it effectively.

But give him a few more years and he’ll be making hay the old fashioned way.

It was only a little after 3:30, so we packed up the kids and went to a park for a treat.

The park was 2 minutes from the farm, but Winnie didn’t make it. She needed a quick nap.

But then she was up and getting after it.

Trying to to everything the big kids do.

After supper popsicle is a great way to wind down a great summer day.
