Monday is the day we bake bread, most weeks. We try to get it done as early as possible in the morning, so that we can have fresh bread for lunch.

Since Seppi still doesn’t have very much school this year, and Winnie has no school at all (except for coloring “pretty pictures”) they usually want to be involved in the bread making process.

Of course Winnie is too small even to count scoops reliably, but Seppi is big enough to count out a certain number of scoops of this, or teaspoons of that. They both love dumping and mixing things, and they love watching the bubbles form in the sponge.

Their favorite part is “punching down” the dough before the loaves are formed.
This particular recipe came from a book we got from Grandma Betty (a.k.a. Gigi) who apparently bought it back in the 90’s. Unlike our other recipes which make either two or four loaves, this one makes three, which is perfect for us.

I can cut one of the lumps in half and Seppi and Winnie can each make a “baby loaf.”

The “S” for “Seppi” didn’t come out very well. I need to get an actual razor for scoring bread.

“I maked this baby bread!”

Beautiful crumb, I must say.

Winnie is ready for lunch.
Often, if we get the bread baked before 11:30, Monday lunch is nothing but bread and butter, with cheese and some raw veggies. They usually eat that first hot loaf entirely gone in one sitting.
Then we like to grab a book and snuggle down for a little after lunch reading.

No, Seppi and Winnie cannot read yet. Don’t let them fool you.
Unfortunately that after lung quiet time these days is always interrupted by Other Things We Need to Do!
