Bed 1 in the garden is going to be root crops this year (carrots, onions, beets) as such it needs to be one of the first ones prepped, since we will be seeding these very soon. Bed 2 is already seeded and growing nicely with winter wheat. Bed 3 is going to be the legumes (peas and beans) and the peas should be going in the ground in the next couple of weeks as well.

This is going to call for a lot of wood chips.

A big pile of wood chips is one of the most fun things on the farm. Especially when they were told they couldn’t play in our pile of topsoil, they were relieved to find that they are still allowed to play in the wood chips.

Such a helpful little farmer girl.

She insists on trying to do everything Seppi does. Sometimes that works out for her, and sometimes it doesn’t.

After putting in the wood chips on the walk-ways, it is time to cover the straw bales (what is left of them) with the top soil.

The straw bales were our tomato patch our first year gardening at the farm. We planted winter wheat into them in the fall of 2023 and harvest that last summer. Now they are rotted down to barely a hump in the ground so we will use them as a substrate of organic matter as we plant our roots into some soil above them.

Winnie likes to ride in the wheelbarrow.

And load the wheelbarrow.

One tiny blue scoop at a time.

I love this wheelbarrow. It can actually carry four kids if they are stacked properly.

A job well done. Next up, the peas.
