Happy Little Plants

Last week Seppi and Winnie and Daddy spent a day in the workshop because it was too cold for Winnie outside. We made two woodworking projects. The first was a planter shelf.

The seedlings we planted last week have started nicely. At least the cabbages and brussels sprouts have started. The Peppers, according to the package, will be “slow and sporadic.” Thus far they live up to the hype.

Unfortunately, we are running into the same problem we did last year, where the plants are getting “leggy.” This means they are reaching out towards the light, getting too tall and thin. If you look closely you’ll see that the base of the stem of the tallest sprout is narrower than the top part of the stem. This can cause them to get weak, susceptible to rotting at the soil line, and eventually they fall over and die. We lost a bunch last year because of that.

If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results, well… we may be crazy but we are not insane.

We built a planter. And ordered some grow lights.

Look at those happy little plants!

The best thing about this planter is that it has a double layer of shelves, so we can plant another four trays of seedlings on the top shelf (tomatoes, bak choy, cucurbits, etc) on the top shelf without taking up any more of our table.

So pretty!
