As sometimes happens, Tuesday afternoon we had a short stretch of down time, about twenty minutes, between doing chores and starting supper. 20 minutes is a lot of time, enough to get a quick job knocked out if you’re all set up, or read a story book, but not really enough to get much progress on a long term project usually.
So Winnie and Daddy went to the workshop, and pulled out a hand plane I have been restoring, along with the sharpening jig and the diamond stones and strop. We spent about 10 or 15 minutes sharpening the blade, which is a bit ridiculous except that there was a chip in the edge from hitting a nail last year.
Then we spent about 5 minutes planing a piece of scrap lumber.
The next time you have 20 minutes of white space, I highly recommend sharpening a hand plane.
It is very satisfying. Trust me.
