our Chickens, Our Water

Man Work Monday

That should totally be a thing, by the way. I think it would be awesome.

I got home from working out this morning to find a small man awake and ready to start the day. Actually, he was snuggling in my spot in Mommy and Daddy’s bed, but as soon as he heard that I was getting ready to start the day, he threw the covers off and leaped over the edge of the bed saying, “Dada! Don’t leave without me! I want to tum too!”

I reassured him I wasn’t leaving quite yet, because I hadn’t had breakfast. So he got into his “daytime clothes” all by himself while I showered, and then we had a man breakfast.

Eggs and bacon, ’cause we don’t need no stinkin’ carbs!

Unless they are in the form of cookies. Then they are okay.

We ate the last of the Albanian lemon butter cookies.

Then we did Seppi’s school while the girls got out of bed and got moving. When he found that Mommy was making pancakes for the girls, Seppi jumped in on that and mooched a second breakfast.

Then we were off to the farm. We were planning on getting the pump and filter set up, but soon after we got there Mommy texted and asked how many eggs were in the fridge at the farm, so we had to sort and count the eggs, and in that process we noticed that some of them has chicken manure on them, which means that the nesting boxes need to be cleaned out, which reminded me that there is no clean bedding in there to replace the soiled bedding, because I’ve been meaning to get the whole house cleaned out so it can compost, so it can go in the garden…

One thing led to another, and we started moving wheelbarrow loads of chicken bedding.

The ladies were very indignant at finding their maternity rooms cleared out of all bedding in the middle of the day! One enterprising hen actually started carrying bundles of (dirty) bedding up the ramps to make herself a new nest in her favorite nesting box.

So I put Seppi to work putting clean straw in their boxes.

An hour or so of work, and three loads were dumped in the compost bin, and one load spread on the old straw-bale bed. I really need to spread some topsoil on that and plant the winter cover crops.

The hens were happy to have their nesting boxes back.

Seppi and Daddy are on to the next job, but first, a snack.

Plenty more where that came from. We should pick those well tomorrow.

With the rains starting, it is imperative we get our ditch filled in, so none of the dirt runs out from under the cement pad. This could cause the end of the shop floor to sink and crack. So we filled in most of the ditch that we had run the water lines in, leaving just the propane line uncovered for maintenance.

My selfie camera has condensed moisture between the lens and the screen cover.

Seppi found a huge rock to lift.

“Whoa! I’m so strong!”

We had to stop the digging so that we had time to put our electrical box in place. This will allow us to run power to the pump and to a light at the corner of the barn.

Not quite strong to squeeze the trigger yet, but he definitely gave it the old pre-school try.

According to an electrician friend, this is not exactly how it’s done, but it will work.

Ready to run wire.

We ran out of time, and had to hurry home for lunch, but we definitely had a good, solid productive morning.
