Younger Berries

We pruned our elderberries back to the stumps earlier this year, (along with the mature cherries, which, incidentally, produced a much better crop this year than they did last year).

Look at that majestic shrub!

And the two purple-leaf varieties are doing quite well too.

What we have learned from this is that the Elderberry will re-sprout from the stump with great abandon, but these are not one-year varieties. That is, they do not bear on first year canes (some elderberries do, apparently). We will see if they bear fruit next year.

The blueberries, however, are a totally different story. They are bearing all kinds of fruit.

And the blackberries are coming in! Bad timing, we’ve got a lot going on this week.
