Our Soil

Back to the Worms

Last week we worked on harvesting our latest round of worm castings. Part of that process is filling our new bin with worms and fresh worm food. This time we pulled the ashes and charred wood out of the fire pit to be part of the next batch of worm composting.

This is referred to in gardening and traditional farming as “potash.” It is a potent source of potassium, but has to be handled with care as it is also very basic and under the wrong conditions can cause alkilinization of the soil.

So after putting in a thin layer on top of a layer of greens, we added a thick layer of shredded paper. In general, when composting, if in doubt, add more browns.

Winnie has your browns right here!

Seppi, eating the very last of the honey berries.

Oh! So that’s where all of our not-quite-ripe-yet montmorency cherries have been going.
