Our Pasture

Best laid plans

Thursday was the first day we tried to stretch the fence in the pasture. Got off to a good start, but ended up not going according to plan.

The problem was that I actually have no idea how to stretch a woven wire fence, and had no idea how much stretch it would have.

So I got out first thing in the morning and anchored the far end of it, on the northeast corner, where it goes around the horse panels. I stretched it out to the other end, and planned to come back later in the day to anchor the near end, and then tension the middle like a bow string to pull both ends tight at once.

Unfortunately, I misjudged the amount of stretch we would get and so anchored it too short on the near end.

The clamp worked beautifully,

as did the anchor/come-along tensioning system.

But we just couldn’t get enough stretch, so we had to unfasten the far end and re-fasten it shorter.

Still not enough stretch, so we had to unfasten it completely and leave it hanging until we could fasten the inside corner.

It was at this point, with one wire tie fastened to the inside corner post, that we got a text from Mommy.

“Supper?”

It was 5:10 PM. Supper was supposed to be at five.

We cleaned up our tools as fast as we could, and did the chores like lightning, but it was still 5:40 by the time we got home for supper.

Oh well, not much got accomplished, other than learning a few wrong ways to do it, but I got to work hard with Evie today, who learned how to wrap a wire tie and how to work a come-along.

So a good day.
