Our Garden

Garden Beds and Soil Temps

Finished shaping the garden beds and mulching the pathways, just before sunrise this lovely Good Friday morning.

Not bad looking! This is the last year we should have to do such extensive shaping. Starting this fall we will simply be top dressing with screened manure/compost (big dreams there!) and adding a few wheelbarrow loads to the tops of the paths every year.

Checked the soil temperatures this morning, and, as feared, the reports of 55 degrees were a bit exaggerated.

This bed was shaped early last week and has had about 10 days to sit in the “sun” (mostly cloudy) and warm up, hampered by the cool rain that does insist upon falling most days. It is only about 46-47 degrees. Warm enough for the cold season crops we started, peas, radishes, lettuce and spinach. Too cold for any of the other crops.

This is the newer bed, turned over yesterday. Only 42 degrees.
