Family vacations are fun adventures in which we get to experience new things and see new places. They are also busy. Very busy. Even when everyone doesn’t get sick. So we were happy to get back home last Saturday and spend a quiet Sunday doing as close to nothing as we could manage, given the need to recover all our gear and replenish our fridge before Monday hit.

It just so happened to be one of those beautiful, rare, gorgeous spring days that we sometimes get in March here in Western Washington. Actually, we had three of them in a row, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday this week.

Buds on the braeburn apple tree.

No matter how hard I prune them, they just keep coming back for more!

Our little Havran Quince is starting to bud out as well.

Honeyberry and black currant.

This was our most prolific black currant last year. Looks like it is setting up to do well this year as well.

Our blueberries never produce much of a crop. It isn’t wet enough for them, but they do provide a few handfulls of snacks for the kids.

The smaller of the the two big black currants. Leaves busting out all over.

And the Hollywood Plum, eager to get the year off to a good start. To the right of it you can see the goji berry runners leafing out like it’s their job.

Our dependable yellow plum.

Comfrey is sprouting!

And on the front lawn, our goumi berries are starting to bud as well.

Lest you think spring is here, this is one of the traps that the PNW likes to set for gardeners. There are usually a couple of beautiful days in March, just enough to get you anxious to put seeds in the ground, and then it goes back to cold and gray for another month.
Not fooled this year. Also, too busy to plant seeds this week, otherwise I probably would have.
