Work bench

With so much to do outside, I wonder why I spend the few hours I have to work on the farm on a workbench in the shop. Well, the answer to that in the last couple weeks has been mostly circumstantial. It has been cold, wet and rainy, and the kids have had colds. When I am over at the farm with the kids, I can’t go out to work in the back pasture and leave them in the house by themselves (mischief would certainly ensue). When they are sick, I don’t want them out in the cold and wet all day, and anyway, they would start protesting pretty quickly. And then yesterday, while the weather was clear-ish and I might have been able to get some pruning or other tasks done, we had repair and delivery folks scheduled all day long, and I needed to be at the front driveway.

So work in the shop it is. Plus, the workbench is one of those tasks that has a personal impact outweighing its actual relevance to long term plans. It is a way of making order out of the chaos that is supposed to be our most functional work space, and as such, every step closer to taming the massive pile of stuff is a welcome step.

I did not like the first iteration, it was a bit too tall, so I took it off the wall and shortened all the legs by 3 1/2 inches. After Adam confirmed that it was a good height for him (he is a couple inches shorter) we re-attached it and began building the shelving.

It turned out this was a perfect job for Seppi. He could stand on the bench and all the shelf brackets were exactly at the right height for him to work on.

He got to “run the level”.

And did his best to screw in screws. In fact, he is very energetic about this, and often tries to screw a screw in without pausing to ask one is needed there or not.

Apparently it’s a good reading perch as well…
