Digging in the Dirt

We are still trying to get water run out to the pature before we get the fences set up. Joel Salatin (and the Dougherty‘s and basically every other rotational grazier on the planet) says to have water and fencing figured out and in place before you start bringing home animals.

So Ryan is working on getting those in place, so one of these years he can be the hero Kathleen deserves, and buy her a milk cow for Valentine’s day.

WE had a plumber out to look at our setup, and he quoted an absolutely ridiculous price to put it all together for us. At that price, we may as well just take a couple weeks off work with no pay, do it ourselves, and spend some quality time while we’re at it, maybe go to a fancy steak house. We would still be ahead.

Unfortunately, we worked the last two weekends, and will have to work this coming weekend, so we haven’t gotten to it yet. But Ryan did dig down to find the feeder pipe that we need to splice into.

It looks like 3/4 inch poly, but it is 3 1/2 feet down!

Seriously, the previous owner was a bit of a maniac when it came to over-building stuff. I guess he thought he was still in Idaho, burying pipe for those Idaho winters. Well, ours will only be about 2 feet down, more than enough for this neck of the woods.
