Our Garden

Harvesting Amaranth

It was a little late, some of the seeds had already started to drop on the ground, but we finally got to it.

Amaranth is a flowering, pseudo grain, it produces a very tiny seed. Actually, come to think of it about the size of a mustard seed.

Pretty drama, free to grow, and harvesting was a cinch. Just strip the branches off of the flowers and toss them in a bucket.

We filled up a 5 gallon bucket pretty easily, but by the time we thresh and winnow out the seeds and get rid of all the stems and chaff, we will be lucky to have a pound of seeds I think.

Still, not bad for an experiment. We’ll take what we have, and make a porridge out of it and see if people actually like it before we decide to plant more for next year. Or, given how easily it seems to grow, it might make a very cheap Chicken forage.
