Our Garden

Sowing Oats

It has been a crazy busy and stressful week/weekend/week so far. Too much going on. Quick update, the house garden is completely taken out except for the tomatoes. One clearing the beds we found we had an issue with tree roots.

There’s a large old maple in the yard, and apparently, when we extended the garden 8 feet into the yard earlier this year, that extended it into the maple trees, roots down. The maple has no qualms whatsoever about sending its roots out into the freshly tilled, mulched and compost and soil, and competing with all of the vegetables for nutrients.

This makes it very difficult to start plants in these beds, not sure how we’re going to skin that cat. It may be time to retire that garden, and turn it over to perennial fruits and flowers.

For this winter, however, we are going to try winter coats, which, if they grow, will be ready to harvest next August.

The only time that he has gotten to work out, there is in the evenings after work, hence the reason he is showing the oat seeds in business casual and flip-flops.

Do you have to turn the seeds into the soil with a fork, too many fine tree roots for a rake, and if you leave the seeds on the top, the birds clean them out before anything has a chance to sprout.

And there you have. Oat seeds in the ground. Now to see what happens.
